GIVING THANKS THIS DAY
This is an original 1863 illustration by Thomas Nast of "Thanksgiving Day, 1863." The image shows scenes of importance to this critical period in our Nation's History. The image show a nation in earnest prayer. Our founding fathers, our political leaders, our military leaders, emancipated slaves, and the destitute are all seen lifting their prayers before God. In the center, we see a dramatic image of Columbia (Lady Liberty) kneeling in prayer. This is a touching illustration, and an important reminder of the critical role that prayer played in the history of our Nation.

The War on Thanksgiving!?!
We all know about the liberals war against Christmas. Now they are trying to stop Thanksgiving as well. A college English professor has taken it upon herself to end a decades long tradition at Claremont Elementry School.

Thanksgiving: Triumph of Capitalism Over Socialism
First I want to wish each of you a very Happy Thanksgiving. With all the problems we face in America at home and abroad, this is still the greatest nation on earth. We truly have much for which to be thankful.

My Thanksgiving tribute this year centers on our forebears at Plymouth. Most of us are very familiar with the story of the first Thanksgiving, when the Pilgrims gathered with their new-found Indian friends to give thanks to God for not only sparing their lives but giving them the blessing of abundance after nearly failing to survive their first winter in New England.

What you might NOT know, however, is the story behind the story. ...

How Relevant are the Pilgrims?
For something to be deemed not relevant is the kiss of death in some evangelical Christian congregations across this country. As churches try to influence culture the Church at the same time is often swallowed up by it. The Pilgrims certainly would be categorized by many as severely irrelevant in lifestyle, separatist ways, and by their manner of worship in today's culture.

Thanksgiving, Obama, and the Pilgrims
The several dozen Pilgrims who celebrated the first Thanksgiving in Massachusetts in 1621 would later fold their Plymouth Colony of religious Separatists into the nearby Massachusetts Bay Colony of Puritans. The arch-Protestant Separatists had quit the Church of England, while the theologically similar Puritans had originally hoped for Calvinist reforms within the state church. Once in America, the Puritans established their own new church system, into which the Pilgrim Separatists merged, that was Congregationalist in polity and Reformed in doctrine.

Washington's Prayers
While reading a small booklet entitled "What They Believed: The Faith of Washington, Jefferson, and Lincoln," (written and compiled by the late D. James Kennedy, Ph.D.), I noticed a segment entitled, "His (referring to Washington) Fervent Prayers."

Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving week is here, and along with it the mad rush to make sure that the dinner is organized, travel plans on schedule, and the beds are made with fresh sheets for out-of-town guests. People often ask me or my parents what special things we are planning for our Thanksgiving meal. Honestly? I think long ago we all figured out that the simpler the better. We make our roast turkey the same way every year, because it works, and it's good. Same with the stuffing. I rather think my mother would have a riot on her hands if she changed her stuffing in any way. We'll have green beans, and either squash or sweet potatoes, heaping mounds of mashed potatoes, and some form of cranberry sauce. Dessert is usually my dad's apple cranberry pie. (Check the site for more Thanksgiving recipe ideas.)
